Director's Message

Sopanam School of Panchavadyam was established in 2010 with a focus on the upliftment of percussion arts and artists. As part of the aim to make Sopanam as a university for percussion arts, in the first year itself a Panchavadyam was performed with 201 members that was marked in the history of Panchavadyam as the one with large number of artists. The event also listed the name of Sopanam School in Limca Book of Records. This led to the concept of increased number of artists in a Panchavadyam performance. Later, Chenda and Panchavadyam classes are started in different places. By 2015, 101 member Thayambaka was performed with 264 artists cooperated. That again marked in the Limca Book of Records. Sopanam marked its record in both Chenda and Panchavadyam and through all this; we aim to activate all the art lovers of Valluvanadu and thereby establishing a new culture of arts. After that, we aimed at establishing gender equality in percussion arts. For that we formed a women Panchavadyam group and in 2016, 31 numbered women Panchavadyam had their debut performance celebrated. After 2016, in order to catch Kerala's various percussion arts, artists; their ups and downs to the mainstream eyes of Kerala, we organized a 7 day event called 'Vadyolsavam'. In the event, more than 500 artists performed around 35 percussion art forms and around 1000 instruments were exhibited. Various seminars and demonstrations made the event a remarkable experience in which more than 100000 people visited during the time. Then, with a vision of spreading Kerala's percussion art culture to other states in India as well as other countries, we started a music trail. As a first step for making sopanam a university for percussion arts, we applied for starting degree courses under Malayalam University, Thunjanparambu and waiting for the university order for the same. Sopanam has its long vision a establishing a university for percussion arts only, a theatre and a library for percussion arts, percussion instruments making centre, etc. From old generation to new digital facilitated library is planning to be established. We are expecting to establish the university campus in three to five acres of land in traditional setup. Our aim is to develop artists with traditional values and transform the next generation to a art culture. For that we need financial as well as intellectual, emotional and physical support of all art lovers all over the world.
